London Buses
Southern train service
Southern / Thameslink customer advice: A signaling issue in the Brockley area will cause disruptions to Southern and Thameslink services that typically run between London Bridge and Norwood Junction / East Croydon / West Croydon. A number of schedule changes will take place, so please see the advice below. If there is no direct train to your destination, expect to transfer trains more often or use a different route to complete your trip, which will likely take about 20 minutes longer than usual. Delays of about 10-15 minutes are expected for southbound trains that do run through the affected area. Please note that the delay for each specific train will vary.
Service changes and alternate travel options: Unless otherwise stated, all the changes below apply in both directions on each route. We recommend checking journey planning tools for full details. While traveling, please listen to announcements and check station screens. Where alternate options are mentioned, your ticket will be accepted at no extra charge.
Thameslink: Trains between Brighton and Cambridge will be canceled: Alternate Thameslink and Gatwick Express trains will run between Brighton, Haywards Heath, Gatwick Airport, and Central London. Alternate Great Northern trains will run between London Kings Cross and Cambridge. Great Northern local trains on the Cambridge route will make an additional stop at Ashwell & Morden.
Rush-hour Thameslink trains between East Grinstead, London Bridge, and Bedford will be canceled: Alternate Southern trains will run between East Grinstead and London Victoria. London Underground service is available across London. Alternate Thameslink trains will run between London and Bedford.
Trains between Three Bridges / Gatwick Airport and Bedford via Redhill will be modified: These trains will operate normally northbound. However, southbound trains will be detoured and will not stop at London Bridge and Norwood Junction (where they usually would). Alternate Southern and Thameslink trains will run between London Bridge, Norwood Junction, and East Croydon. You can also use London Underground services to transfer across London, including trips between the Blackfriars and London Bridge areas.
Trains between Brighton and Bedford will make an additional stop at Norwood Junction: You can use these instead of other Thameslink trains that would usually stop there.
Southern: Trains between London Victoria and London Bridge will be canceled: Alternate Southern trains will run between London Victoria and Crystal Palace, and London Overground trains will run on the Windrush line between Canada Water, New Cross Gate, and Crystal Palace, allowing connections to the London Underground. You can also use London Underground services to transfer between Victoria and London Bridge. Southeastern will also provide alternate service between Penge East (instead of Penge West), Crofton Park (instead of Honor Oak Park or Brockley), or Nunhead (instead of Brockley) and London Victoria, and between New Cross (instead of New Cross Gate) and London Bridge.
Trains between Epsom and London Bridge will be canceled: Alternate Southern trains will run between London Victoria and Epsom, for London Underground connections. You can also use South Western Railway service between London Waterloo and Epsom. For trips via West Croydon, alternate Southern trains will run between Epsom Downs, Sutton, West Croydon, and London Victoria. You can also use London Underground services to transfer between Victoria and London Bridge.
Rush-hour local service between Norwood Junction and London Bridge via Sydenham will be canceled: If there is no service from your station, please use London Buses instead.
Some rush-hour Southern trains between the South Coast and London Bridge may be detoured to and from London Victoria: Please check journey planning tools for complete details. Alternate Southern and Thameslink trains will be available between East Croydon and London Bridge. You can use London Underground services to transfer between Victoria and London Bridge. Also, trains between London Victoria and Littlehampton will make an additional stop at Three Bridges.
Planning your trip: You can view real-time departure boards and a live map of the network. You can see an alternate route guide. In the London area, you can plan alternate routes using the TfL Journey Planner. You can also use the Southern app for real-time information.
Airport connections: Because this disruption will affect some trains via Gatwick Airport and Luton Airport, please leave plenty of extra time if you are catching a flight.
Can you tell me more about the incident? Yesterday, a track circuit failure was reported on one of the two southbound tracks in the Brockley area. Track circuits are part of the signaling equipment used to detect and monitor the physical presence of trains. Network Rail personnel checked the system remotely and discovered an electrical issue. Crews responded overnight, but unfortunately, due to the complexity of the problem, the malfunction could not be resolved. Trains will be brought to a stop and operators will be given verbal permission to proceed on the affected track. This causes delays, so we have had to make schedule adjustments to reduce train congestion. Many schedule changes apply in both directions; otherwise, trains and crews would end up in the wrong locations to operate the rest of the daily schedule.
Check before you travel: You can check your itinerary using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner.
Compensation: You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay completing your trip today. Please keep your train ticket and note your itinerary, as both are required to file a claim.
